Exploiting Confusion Over SKT Hacking, Inducement of Malicious App Installation Is Rampant

Everspin, which operates the phishing prevention solution 'FakeFinder,' called for caution today (8th), stating that cases of inducing the installation of mobile remote control apps by exploiting anxious user sentiment after the SK Telecom hacking incident have been discovered. According to Everspin, phishing perpetrators used tactics such as faking phone calls or text messages saying, "I will check if you are a victim of the SKT SIM hacking" or "Your device seems to have been hacked," to induce the installation of remote control malicious apps. Malicious apps using names like "Damage Relief Bureau" are explained to perform functions such as collecting personal info or intercepting calls when calling financial institutions or the National Police Agency. In particular, phishing perpetrators tried to deceive victims by stealing the names of actual existing security companies like "SK shieldus" or "AnyDesk" for the names of malicious apps. Everspin stated, "We are quickly relaying info on malicious apps to the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), but similar cases will likely continue to occur," emphasizing the prevention of voice phishing and smishing crime damage.
